All of this was prior to the revolution of 1959 and as it unfolded, Alina came to accept one of two feelings from her father, depending on his mood: adoration or neglect; however, his influence as an authority figure in her life never diminished. As Alina grew, she recognized her societal position as a member of the elite, but the political practices and the utter neglect of women that she witnessed under her father's regime drove her to renounce that postion and her relationship with her father as well.
Alina Fernandez was finally forced to leave Cuba, her homeland, and sought refuge in the United States. She has not spoken with her father for more than a decade.
